 "High quality brushing" 2009-07-25
By David Burg (Bellevue, WA USA)
I was a non-believer for electric toothbrush. This product converted me. I was amazed by the 'clean' feeling of my teeth just after a few days.

The UV senitizer is an overkill, I stopped using it after a few weeks, unless you share the brush head with someone else, which likely you won't because it is easy to swap the brush heads.

It is also difficult to say when a brush head is used and should be changed.

My brother has a competing product, but I found the Sonicare more sturdy, with smaller brush heads for easier brushing of back teeth, and a sleeker design.

My sister tried my Sonicare also and refused to give it back :-)

 "Sonicare, Model RS930" 2009-05-28
By James Carboni
I just bought this product, two days ago. I don't its track record yet, for quality & longevity, but it's got loads of power, to clean my teeth well. The best part of this 'brush has got to be: the way you install the brush head onto a metal pin (on handle)! Easy ON,, easy OFF. AND...No more sticky, gummy, dirty under-head attachments to clean, like on the older models! This feature, I'm going to love!! So that's it for now.

By L. Luttinger (St. Petersburg, FL USA)
This is our third generation of Sonicare brushes. We have purchased each new generation when they were introduced. The first generation work flawlessly as did the second. We purchased two of the RS980s last June. Since then one failed and was replaced six months later. The replacement failed two months ago. The other failed a month ago. I'm still waiting for a replacement under the two year warranty as Sonicare is claiming that they are "out of stock".

 "Great cleaning tool." 2009-06-04
By L. Guillory
After 7 years, my Sonicare Elite toothbrush broke. Having such good success with the Sonicare line, I decided to upgrade to the Pro model. I have been using it over a month now and am pleased with the cleaning results.

I don't find the toothbrush too loud. It is louder than a battery-operated model, but it also cleans much better too.

 "Good but .." 2009-01-21
By dashanzi (New York, NY)
I have had this for about 6 months and bought it from Amazon. It's better than the Oral-B product I had before as some other reviewers have pointed out.

But, after 3 or so months of use, the brush bottom has started to develop a fungus or rust that is discoloring the handle and this is spreading from the bottom upwards. It looks dreadful. Also I have had to take it in for repair due to the battery not charging (a common design flaw with all these brushes that use nicad batteries). For a toothbrush this expensive you would hope that Philips would make it more reliable.

I must say the warranty has been painless to us. I bought the toothbrush in the states and just dropped it into the Hong Kong repair center with no questions or issues.

 "Awesome but somewhat misleading" 2009-01-08
By Jesslynn C. Stull (Norman, OK)
The tooth brush is everything you ever wanted and everything as advertised. The only disappointment was the Waterpik flosser. My husband wanted a water pick in addition to the tooth brush and I didn't take the time to research what exactly that was (my bad). So when the tooth brush came with a Waterpik I thought cool, mission accomplished. But the Waterpik is just a powered piece of stiff plastic that you can wiggle in between your teeth. Not powered by water obviously. Opps. Otherwise, the money spent on the tooth brush is so worth it! I've even started using it, & I can totally feel an amazing difference!

"Much better than the older Sonicares; somewhat pricy" 2008-12-09
By Anonymous (USA)
After years and years of using an Sonicare Advance, I finally decided to upgrade to a newer Sonicare.

The pros:

+The newer Sonicares are better looking, have a better weight (solid, but not heavy), and are smaller than the older models.

+The older Sonicare brush heads were a bit squarish. The newer ones are more naturally shaped. (By the way, unless you have a very large mouth the smaller tips are superior- they get in the corners much better).

+The older Sonicare heads used magnets (visible and easily set off) that rusted, and you'd have to screw on the heads onto a compartment that very easily got gross. Easier to put on, no magnet fuss, no disgusting build up (the manual recommends you rinse it once per week, both the top of the handle and the brush bottom, where each connects to the other).

+The new brushing modes are good. Some are kind of gimmicky (GoCare doesn't clean your teeth well enough) but the clean modes and MaxCare modes (MaxCare does the 30 second cycles for each quadrant of the mouth, plus an additional 15 seconds of pulsing, which helps with braces and such).

+The new charging base is smaller, and this one includes a very small charging base that's convenient for travel.

+The UV sanitizer is simple enough to use. I always misplaced my caps, having a spot for the brushes that sanitizes is handy.

+The SmartStep feature is good for first time Sonicare users (slowly ramps up intensity to build up your gum strength).

+The quad pacer (a little buzz that tells you when to switch where you're brushing) is a very helpful little feature that tells you when to switch what area you're brushing.

The cons?

-Brush heads are expensive. The handles last 5+ years, but the brushes are outrageously expensive. Buy them whenever they're on sale and just save them. Save coupons and buy at wholesale clubs if you can.

-The UV sanitizer, according to my dentist, is kind of useless...

Overall, excellent brush, cleans well, ergonomically good. A bit expensive, but quality only hurts once (except the brush heads...).

Tips?

-Sonicares seem to use a little less toothpaste, in my experience. A pea sized amount is good.

-Wet your brush head with water before putting the toothbrush on and brushing. Otherwise it doesn't clean as nearly as well.

-If you've owned a Sonicare before and don't want to use the SmartStep feature (2 weeks of gradually increasing the power), put it on the charging base and hold the power button for 5 seconds. One beep means you turned it off, two beeps means you turned it back on.

-If you don't like the quadpacer, you can disable it in the same way as the SmartStep, just use the "brush mode" button instead.

"great item, my ortho sees a difference" 2008-11-03
By xkarinax (Long Beach, CA)
Hello,

This brush is AMAZING. My ortho and my dentist noticed a difference in my teeth after using it for 1 month. The sanitizer keeps my brush clean. The battery lasts for a long time. Excellent and highly recommended--well worth the price. I had another electic toothbrush (Braun) which was much cheaper but didn't do as much. I see my teeth are whiter and my braces do not get discolored anymore. Excellent!

"The Best Sonicare Models Yet!" 2009-03-23
By diljs
I've been using an older Sonicare model, the "Essence 5300" on which the switch was beginning to go out. I decided to upgrade to a Flexcare model and am very glad I did. The Flexcare has been a great improvement all around.

Pros:

-New Lighter, Slimmer Handle

This is probably the first thing you'll notice if you're coming from an older Sonicare handle, and it is a very welcome improvement. The FlexCare handle is small and feels much better in the hand than my old bulky 5300 handle. The unit is actually longer than my old brush, but that's not a big deal at all.

-New ProResults Brush Head system

The new heads are great. Sonicare moved the tuning fork from the head to the handle, which means smaller brush heads than on the old models. A 3 pack of the new heads is the same price as a 2 pack of the old heads, making them actually a better deal for a superior product.

-No More Crud in the Handle!

The biggest problem with my old brush was that old toothpaste/drool/water tended to collected in the space where the handle connects to the brush head. It would get all moldy and gross if you didn't clean it out regularly. Thankfully, this problem is completely gone with the Flexcare handles.

-Lithium Ion Batteries

I've waited a long time for Sonicare to upgrade from inferior NiCd batteries, and they finally have. With Lithium Ion, you don't have to worry about battery capacity decreasing over time, or a memory effect. The new batteries charge faster, too.

-UV Sanitizer Included

UV Sanitizers for toothbrushes are relatively new to the market, and a great idea. I always felt a little gross letting my brush sit out on the counter, even with the cover that comes with sonicare heads, and then putting it in my mouth. Scientists actually recommend that a toothbrush be kept 3 feet from the toilet due to "airborne particles" from the flush - yuck! A UV sanitizer will kill anything that might land on your brush, as well as things such as cold germs that might have come from your own mouth. Using the sanitizer is easy, just pop the brush head(s) in, press the green button, and wait for the UV light to kill the germs. I store my brush head inside the sanitizer until I need it next. The Charger is integrated with the sanitizer, although a separate travel charger is included.

-Quadpacer

This is basically a beep that goes off every 30 seconds while brushing, reminding you to switch to a new area of your mouth. It has appeared in previous models (not my 5300 though), and is nice if you'll use it, but I tend to go at my own pace as I focus more on problem areas in my mouth and less on others.

-5 Total Brushing Modes/Routines

There are 3 selectable "modes": clean mode: (2 minutes broken into 30 second segments), sensitive (a "gentler" clean mode) and massage (the brush pulsates for gum stimulation). Go Care Routine shortines the standard 2 minute clean mode to 1 minute, while Max Care is a longer, 3 minute cycle that includes both clean and massage mode. I set the brush on clean mode and tend not to use the other options, but some may find them useful.

-More Environmentally Friendly

Although buying a new product of any sort will always have a negative environmental footprint, these new brushes are better than the old models due to their Li-Ion batteries, reduced bulk, and lower waste in the smaller replacement brush heads.

Cons:

-Price

Let's be clear on this: a Sonicare toothbrush is a luxury product. You're paying a lot more up front, and you get to keep paying more every time you buy replacement heads. Surprisingly, heads for Flexcare units are actually a cheaper than the older models; you get 3 Flexcare heads for the same price as 2 of the old heads. The per head price is still several times what it would cost to buy a new manual brush; but for me the superior cleaning is worth it.

Noise

-Flexcare models are louder than older models. I'm not sure why this is, and supposedly vibration has been reduced in exchange, but the noise can be too much for some. The UV sanitizer also makes a quiet electric "hum" when plugged in with the door closed, even if the UV bulb isn't run.

-Buttons can be depressed while brushing

A couple of people have complained about accidentally hitting 1 of the 2 buttons on the handle while brushing. It hasn't happened to me, but for completeness I'll include this as a possible con.

Overall:

This brush is a vast improvement over my previous brush, and has fixed most of the problems I had without introducing any significant new ones. The fact that replacement brush heads are actually cheaper than on my old brush is a big plus. I highly recommend the Flexcare brushes as a great upgrade to any toothbrush, electric or manual, that you're currently using.

"I never thought a toothbrush could ruin my life!" 2008-12-03
By R. Daoudi (chicago)
Wow, what an awful purchase. First of all, the motor on this thing is ridiculous. The toothpaste will not even stay on the brush! Literally I put the toothpaste on and I turn on the brush and the paste falls off in 2 seconds. Next, when I put the toothbrush to my mouth it tickes so much it is on the border of being painful. I dont know how anyone can use this brush on the inner part of their mouth. And as I brush, specs of water and paste go flying and my mirror has spots all over it. What a disaster this toothbrush is and I recommend everyoen spend $5 on a nice brush and not $100, which is ridiculous. Just floss and use mouthwash and a regular toothbrush.

Customer Buzz
"Would give it 5 stars BUT..." 2008-07-22
By K. Sears (Issaquah, WA United States)
I can't. In fact, I debated about whether to give it three. In the end, I like more about it than I don't, so the three stars.

1) the cleaning features are nice - especially the new "Go" setting for a quicker (i.e. after meal) brush. They work as well as I would expect - which is to say my teeth feel "dentist clean" afterwards.

2) I love the UV cleaning feature.

3) I really like the new smaller head that comes with this model - great for getting the back teeth.

4) The way the heads attach to the handle is much improved over the old model.

5) It comes with a much smaller travel charger - finally!

Sadly there is a HUGE design flaw that is tough to forgive. The button you use to change from one cleaning speed to another is exactly where you grasp the handle of the toothbrush, and unlike the power button, is very easy to depress. This means you are brushing along in "clean" when all of a sudden you are in "gum massage" mode. Not sure how this got past the design team as it is not at all a subtle flaw - and I should mention that both my husband and I have this issue, so it is not a hand size or problem unique to my grip.

So, as long as you are willing to completely relearn how you hold your toothbrush this is a great brush....otherwise, stick with the classic Sonicare.

"My Teeth have never been cleaner!" 2009-04-26

This two handle pack is less expensive than buying two separate ones. It really cleans my teeth! It is noticeably better than my old OralB unit. The auto shutoff and 30 second warnings are something you have have to get used to. Eventually you can develop some sort of rhythm with the brush so you are not halfway done when it decides to shutoff. Very good buy.

 "Where's the ear plugs????" 2008-08-09
By Suz (LA)
I'm not sure what the problem is, but there are three of us in our family, so I purchased this two-handle pack as well as a single pack separately. They are all flex care systems. The single brush has a different colored handle (more like a mint-green and white) while the two pack is the light blue and white. The single brush I purchased (the green flex care brush 6910) is just fine. Quiet works great & my son loves it!! The two-pack has something seriously wrong with it. The brushes are both SO LOUD that you dread brushing your teeth. I get up very early and feel like I'm waking the entire house when I brush my teeth. My sons brush (the single) makes no where near the kind of sounds mine does. Funny thing is, the second brush in this two-pack does the same thing!! Defect? Not sure... I've written a note to Philips Sonicare asking about any issues.... I'll post again when I get the scoop. Does a great job, but the noise is incredible!

**UPDATE** I was finally able to reach customer service for the SoniCare and they first suggested that I replace the brush head (which is brand new... 1 month). That didn't help, so they suggested I return it --- but, silly me, I don't have the box anymore, so I'm stuck with one NOISY toothbrush. Well, at least my teeth are clean!

Most important, the toothbrush works great! Just don't put too much toothpaste on it or it foams up out of your mouth.

GET ONE! Enough said. Easily the BEST toothbrush on the market with the type of clean provided--massage for your gums, timer to let you know to keep on brushing, and gentle mode for those with sensitive teeth. The downside is that the bristles on the brush wear down much faster than a normal brush (or maybe I am just brushing correctly now). I'd say I get maybe a month to a month and a half out of a new brush head.

"My first sonic brush and I love it." 2009-08-05
By Marlena (Las Vegas, NV)
All the 5 stars review says all about this brush, and actually helped me to make my decision about purchasing this one. I research a lot and Philips Flexcare seemed to be the best. Because one cost around $130, and my husband and I use separate bathrooms this special edition with 2 handles, brushes and chargers is a great deal.

Maybe it is a bit loud, but I can't compare with other brushes. Truly it's not bad. It does a great job to clean my teeth and gums. I love to brush my teeth now, and after 2 minutes I'm disappointed it was that short!

Since I'm first time user I was happy about Easy-start feature, that gently increases power over the first 14 brushings.

Overall easy instructions, brush is user friendly, super clean feeling in my mouth, sleek look. The only minus is that sometimes while brushing I can change mode accidently; just have to think how I'm holding the brush.

My husband and I we are both happy with this brush, I don't want to come back to regular toothbrush ever again.

"Check shipping costs before you order...." 2009-04-23
By M. E. Mahan (Lynn Ma)
I bought into the free shipping membership here and am very tired of getting wacked for shipping $13.38 seems a little outrageous for shipping this item.

Why bother to join with the perk of free shipping when not all items are covered.

My days as a very satisfied Amazon customer are so over!

 "Sonic And Brush Action" 2009-03-28
By Harry Ploss
I have the Sonicare Elite and the Ultreo. This unit is an improvement on both. You get the soft Brush action on your Gums and the Sonic vibrations of the Ultreo, giving you the cleanest feeling on your gums and teeth. Really helped my gums feel much better.

It is 115/220v so it is great for traveling. It has a small case for your carry on luggage so you can use during those 30 hour multileg international flight to Asia.

I buy every electric tooth brush offered over the last 25 years, since it is smaller cost than the 4 times visit per year to get my teeth cleaned by the Dentist and Periodontist.

This is the best.

"Buy it. Use it. Love it. Your teeth & gums will thank you." 2009-02-19
By Caroline Edwards (Redmond, WA USA)
My husband & I purchased this product after many recommendations from friends. He'd always been a fan of the disposable electric toothbrushes and I of the regular old toothbrush.

We had NO idea what we were missing! When they say you get that "just from the dentist" clean feeling, it is no exaggeration. My teeth have never felt so clean from brushing and I actually look forward to my sonicare time every day. I've always had a problem with tartar buildup between dental cleanings, even when using tartar control toothpaste. That's now a problem of the past!

Even better, this product has produced noticeable whitening of both my and my husband's teeth. That's just using the regular routine and regular toothpaste. Awesome.

As for some of the complaints about this model's noise/vibration, I can't comment on the comparison to other models since this is our first. But I will say it's not uncomfortable in the mouth or the hand at all; and the noise only seems loud to the user - outside a closed door you just hear a mild buzzing.

P.S. If you're confused about the "FlexCare" part (aka all the cleaning modes), here's the skinny: there are 3 - 2 minute routines of varying intensity(regular, sensitive, and massaging), a 1 minute quick clean (regular intensity), and 3 minute max care that combines the 2 minute regular clean with 1 minute massaging (broken up into four segments, so each quadrant of your mouth gets 30 secs clean + 15 secs massage). All modes feature the quadpacer so you know when to switch zones.
