"Not floored, not very disappointed" 2009-08-16
By J. Simon (GA)
The Sonicare Advance I had for too many years to remember when I first got it, was a rock- 100% dependable for a long time and very solid. This HealthyWhite feels flimsy. It works fine. But given the price, and the price of replacement brushes, I have to wonder, will it last ten years? I doubt it. It's got that 'one drop on a tile floor and throw it away' feel. Again, I'm comparing it to the Advance, which was really built by another company altogether. I'm not telling you anything after a month, only time will tell. But go to a Target and see if you like the feel before you order it on-line.

Also, the base in chintzy- cheap. Horrible? No. But it could have been much better.

Last point, I'd read some people (on Amaxon) saying their brush heads flew off the handle, so it stuck in my head. From my experience, this is not a concern- the way the brushes click onto the handle is secure and well designed and MUCH more convenient than the Advance model I started out by complementing.

 "SHOULD HAVE RESEARCHED MORE..." 2009-08-07
By Craig Michelson
We have used Sonicare toothbrushes for years and this one seems as good, or better, than the others. We travel and its great that this model (R710) has a "world" charger and not just the 110 - 115V that our previous models have.

However, I feel I made two mistakes:

1) This model does not come with a carry case

2) I purchased at Target, could have saved $30 through Amazon. Yea, could return it, but...

"Benefits outweigh the (minor) drawbacks" 2009-07-16
By Desert Girl (Boulder City, NV)
My husband & I have been using the HealthyWhite for a little over a week now and we both agree that it gives our teeth the best brushing we've ever had at home.

Our new dentist and the dental hygienist recommended Sonicare to us both as we both have some gum recession and sensitivity. Rather than just go right out and purchase the first Sonicare we saw on the shelf, we decided to look at the available options.

The other big player in the power toothbrush game is Oral B. There are several others as well, but reviews were difficult to find so the choice eventually came down to Sonicare or Oral B. Also considering that power toothbrushes run on the pricey side (for us anyway), I insisted on doing research.

My research included: Visiting both the Sonicare and Oral B websites and reading about all the different models; reading online reviews, including Amazon reviews, for each of the different models; and a lengthy discussion with our dental hygienist.

The companies' websites were useful for general information. For me, though, the Amazon and other online reviews, were much more helpful in pointing out problems/successes with both Sonicare and Oral B power toothbrushes.

I actually looked at reviews for each Sonicare and Oral B models. After reading the reviews for the lower priced (and apparently older? Sonicare models), like the Essence, I determined that I did NOT want to purchase any of those models. The primary reason: The design of these brushes apparently allows water/toothpaste to seep into part of the brush handle in such a way that mold forms.

With the HealthyWhite and the Flexcare, Sonicare solved this problem, but I was very skeptical about spending nearly $100 (or more!) for a toothbrush.

The Oral B apparently does not suffer from the design flaw of the lower priced Sonicare models and I was actually all set to go ahead with one of the lower priced Oral B models, until I spoke with the dental hygienist.

Following that conversation, I concluded that even if I purchased an Oral B for my own dental needs, we would still need to purchase a Sonicare for my husband, whose needs exceed mine a bit.

For us then it made sense to buy one brush handle and just purchase another brush head.

Although I had read about the difference between sonic dental technology (which Sonicare uses) and oscillating/rotating technology (that Oral B uses), it didn't really make sense to me until my conversation with the hygienist.

The way it was basically explained to me as follows (Sorry if this is a bit graphic):

Sonic technology mixes the toothpaste with your own saliva. The "sonic" part of the technology not only reaches the surface of the teeth but into spaces that no traditional brushing mechanism can reach, even getting in and around the gums.

The Oral B apparently uses the more "traditional" brushing technology and only cleans the area that the bristles of the brush themselves can reach.

This changed my mind, especially in light of my husband's dental needs. At that point, it made more sense to buy one of the newer Sonicare models.

When I first used the Sonicare I expected it to be very loud based on reviews I had read. In my opinion it is quieter than my hairdryer, the noise of which does not bother me. It did take both of us a few days to get used to the feeling of the brush on our teeth.

The Quadpacer technology is helpful, as is the timing mechanism that all Sonicare brushes have, but not really essential in my case: I prefer the longer "Clean and white" cycle and sometimes find that that is not long enough for me.

Some criticize the auto shutoff, but the easy solution to that is just to turn the brush back on. I can always turn it off if I don't want to go through another 2 minutes.

I was a little surprised that the charger is so light and that the brush handle does not fit securely onto the charger: It just rests on the charger and could easily be knocked off. The charger does have room to hold 2 other brushheads.

I have not had any problems with the brushhead popping off the handle when I am brushing my teeth. I do have to be careful about keeping my mouth closed when I am brushing as well as remembering to not start the brush until it's in my mouth.

Overall, though we are very happy with our Sonicare and we really hope it results in better dental appointments. If it does, then it is well worth it despite the higher price tag. My issue with the auto shutoff and the charger do not outweigh the benefits of this brush.

I would recommend this toothbrush, but before doing so I would first recommend talking to your dentist/hygienist and doing your own research. Everyone's dental needs are unique and this brush (or any Sonicare) may not be the right fit for all.

Also, for those of you who do buy a Sonicare, if you register the brush with Sonicare (either online or with the card that comes in the package),the company will send coupons for additional products. I have not yet registered our brush so I don't know how well this works or what kind of coupons Sonicare sends.

There are 3 Sonicare users in our household so, when it comes to ordering replacement brush heads, naturally, we seek the 'family supersize' offer hoping to save a few dollars. As far as I know, this is the largest pack you can get, short of buying them wholesale. Three of these would last us 2 years if we replace the heads every six months, which we do.

Needless to say, but I know I'm preaching to the converted because anyone looking for this item should be a Sonicare user already, 10 years of Sonicare mean lots of money saved in dentist bills and a better quality of life.

No product, no contact. After several unanswered emails from the supplier and Amazon, I called American Express. Thanks to them I received a full refund but no thanks to either the supplier nor Amazon. I have ordered directly from Amazon many times with no problems. However they, as well as, their supplier left me high and dry on this one. Thank you American Express. I won't leave home without you.

I received this as a gift and did not expect to use it daily as the box suggests. It has been very easy to use with the E-series brushheads. Due to the magnetic base on the brushheads, they quickly go right into place when putting them in the sanitizer. It takes about 5-10 seconds to take brushheads of the brush and put them in the sanitizer or remove them from the sanitizer and put them on the brush so I have been using it daily. It also only draws about 5 watts of power so it is not pricey to operate.

Philips Sonicare UV Sanitizer I found the product easy to use, the packaging while it afforded sanitary delivery of the product was moderately easy to open. I use this product daily and feel confident that my toothbrush is free of the bacteria a bathroom use creates. I am happy with my purchase. The instructions were clear and I appreciate the fact that he package contained different base holders for various models of toothbrushes. While I have a Sonicare e 7000 and do not need a holder for the sanitizer, I know that I am not limited to sanitizing only that one model of toothbrush, he E 7000.

"My first sonic brush and I love it." 2009-08-05
By Marlena (Las Vegas, NV)
All the 5 stars review says all about this brush, and actually helped me to make my decision about purchasing this one. I research a lot and Philips Flexcare seemed to be the best. Because one cost around $130, and my husband and I use separate bathrooms this special edition with 2 handles, brushes and chargers is a great deal.

Maybe it is a bit loud, but I can't compare with other brushes. Truly it's not bad. It does a great job to clean my teeth and gums. I love to brush my teeth now, and after 2 minutes I'm disappointed it was that short!

Since I'm first time user I was happy about Easy-start feature, that gently increases power over the first 14 brushings.

Overall easy instructions, brush is user friendly, super clean feeling in my mouth, sleek look. The only minus is that sometimes while brushing I can change mode accidently; just have to think how I'm holding the brush.

My husband and I we are both happy with this brush, I don't want to come back to regular toothbrush ever again.

 "Sonic And Brush Action" 2009-03-28

I have the Sonicare Elite and the Ultreo. This unit is an improvement on both. You get the soft Brush action on your Gums and the Sonic vibrations of the Ultreo, giving you the cleanest feeling on your gums and teeth. Really helped my gums feel much better.

It is 115/220v so it is great for traveling. It has a small case for your carry on luggage so you can use during those 30 hour multileg international flight to Asia.

I buy every electric tooth brush offered over the last 25 years, since it is smaller cost than the 4 times visit per year to get my teeth cleaned by the Dentist and Periodontist.

This is the best.

"The Best Sonicare Models Yet!" 2009-03-23
By diljs
I've been using an older Sonicare model, the "Essence 5300" on which the switch was beginning to go out. I decided to upgrade to a Flexcare model and am very glad I did. The Flexcare has been a great improvement all around.

Pros:

-New Lighter, Slimmer Handle

This is probably the first thing you'll notice if you're coming from an older Sonicare handle, and it is a very welcome improvement. The FlexCare handle is small and feels much better in the hand than my old bulky 5300 handle. The unit is actually longer than my old brush, but that's not a big deal at all.

-New ProResults Brush Head system

The new heads are great. Sonicare moved the tuning fork from the head to the handle, which means smaller brush heads than on the old models. A 3 pack of the new heads is the same price as a 2 pack of the old heads, making them actually a better deal for a superior product.

-No More Crud in the Handle!

The biggest problem with my old brush was that old toothpaste/drool/water tended to collected in the space where the handle connects to the brush head. It would get all moldy and gross if you didn't clean it out regularly. Thankfully, this problem is completely gone with the Flexcare handles.

-Lithium Ion Batteries

I've waited a long time for Sonicare to upgrade from inferior NiCd batteries, and they finally have. With Lithium Ion, you don't have to worry about battery capacity decreasing over time, or a memory effect. The new batteries charge faster, too.

-UV Sanitizer Included

UV Sanitizers for toothbrushes are relatively new to the market, and a great idea. I always felt a little gross letting my brush sit out on the counter, even with the cover that comes with sonicare heads, and then putting it in my mouth. Scientists actually recommend that a toothbrush be kept 3 feet from the toilet due to "airborne particles" from the flush - yuck! A UV sanitizer will kill anything that might land on your brush, as well as things such as cold germs that might have come from your own mouth. Using the sanitizer is easy, just pop the brush head(s) in, press the green button, and wait for the UV light to kill the germs. I store my brush head inside the sanitizer until I need it next. The Charger is integrated with the sanitizer, although a separate travel charger is included.

-Quadpacer

This is basically a beep that goes off every 30 seconds while brushing, reminding you to switch to a new area of your mouth. It has appeared in previous models (not my 5300 though), and is nice if you'll use it, but I tend to go at my own pace as I focus more on problem areas in my mouth and less on others.

-5 Total Brushing Modes/Routines

There are 3 selectable "modes": clean mode: (2 minutes broken into 30 second segments), sensitive (a "gentler" clean mode) and massage (the brush pulsates for gum stimulation). Go Care Routine shortines the standard 2 minute clean mode to 1 minute, while Max Care is a longer, 3 minute cycle that includes both clean and massage mode. I set the brush on clean mode and tend not to use the other options, but some may find them useful.

-More Environmentally Friendly

Although buying a new product of any sort will always have a negative environmental footprint, these new brushes are better than the old models due to their Li-Ion batteries, reduced bulk, and lower waste in the smaller replacement brush heads.

Cons:

-Price

Let's be clear on this: a Sonicare toothbrush is a luxury product. You're paying a lot more up front, and you get to keep paying more every time you buy replacement heads. Surprisingly, heads for Flexcare units are actually a cheaper than the older models; you get 3 Flexcare heads for the same price as 2 of the old heads. The per head price is still several times what it would cost to buy a new manual brush; but for me the superior cleaning is worth it.

Noise

-Flexcare models are louder than older models. I'm not sure why this is, and supposedly vibration has been reduced in exchange, but the noise can be too much for some. The UV sanitizer also makes a quiet electric "hum" when plugged in with the door closed, even if the UV bulb isn't run.

-Buttons can be depressed while brushing

A couple of people have complained about accidentally hitting 1 of the 2 buttons on the handle while brushing. It hasn't happened to me, but for completeness I'll include this as a possible con.

Overall:

This brush is a vast improvement over my previous brush, and has fixed most of the problems I had without introducing any significant new ones. The fact that replacement brush heads are actually cheaper than on my old brush is a big plus. I highly recommend the Flexcare brushes as a great upgrade to any toothbrush, electric or manual, that you're currently using.

"Buy it. Use it. Love it. Your teeth & gums will thank you." 2009-02-19
By Caroline Edwards (Redmond, WA USA)
My husband & I purchased this product after many recommendations from friends. He'd always been a fan of the disposable electric toothbrushes and I of the regular old toothbrush.

We had NO idea what we were missing! When they say you get that "just from the dentist" clean feeling, it is no exaggeration. My teeth have never felt so clean from brushing and I actually look forward to my sonicare time every day. I've always had a problem with tartar buildup between dental cleanings, even when using tartar control toothpaste. That's now a problem of the past!

Even better, this product has produced noticeable whitening of both my and my husband's teeth. That's just using the regular routine and regular toothpaste. Awesome.

As for some of the complaints about this model's noise/vibration, I can't comment on the comparison to other models since this is our first. But I will say it's not uncomfortable in the mouth or the hand at all; and the noise only seems loud to the user - outside a closed door you just hear a mild buzzing.

P.S. If you're confused about the "FlexCare" part (aka all the cleaning modes), here's the skinny: there are 3 - 2 minute routines of varying intensity(regular, sensitive, and massaging), a 1 minute quick clean (regular intensity), and 3 minute max care that combines the 2 minute regular clean with 1 minute massaging (broken up into four segments, so each quadrant of your mouth gets 30 secs clean + 15 secs massage). All modes feature the quadpacer so you know when to switch zones.

"Continue using your Sonicare toothbrush" 2009-09-02
By Thrifty
This was my first purchase from Amazon.com. I have had this Phillips Sonicare for many years and have had good reports from my dentist especially about gum tissue since I have been using the Sonicare. They discontinued the style and I could not find the compact replacement heads - until I went to Amazon.com. I was very pleased with the transaction - no problems!

The Sonicare Replacement Heads were brand new and work perfectly.

 "Great replacement" 2009-08-30

Sure the newer Elite model is engineered better, but until I can shell out the extra cash to replace my handle, which works perfectly after all of these years, this replacement head is great to extend its life.

My Sonicare still works great and I have not been able to find the replacement brushes in any store. The price is comparable to what I would have paid in the store also. So happy to have found them online!
